CINCINNATI (AP) - Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has received a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season, extending the longest coaching tenure in franchise history.

Lewis is entering his 10th season as head coach, a club record. The Bengals are 69-74-1 under Lewis with three winning records in his nine seasons. They're 0-3 in the playoffs.

Lewis played out his contract during the 2009 season, then accepted a two-year extension after two days of discussions with owner Mike Brown. The Bengals reached the playoffs last season as a wild card, going 9-7 before losing to Houston in the first round. He was entering the last year on that two-year deal.

Lewis is third in the NFL in current tenure with one team, behind Philadelphia's Andy Reid and New England's Bill Belichick.

Nathan & Heather's Cozy Vintage Ballard Home House Tour ...

    HeatherPhillips-housetour-1.jpg

    Name: Nathan & Heather Spaulding
    Location: Ballard ? Seattle, Washington
Size: 2 Bedroom- 900 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years ? Rent

Nathan and Heather live in a cozy two bedroom apartment in Ballard, where they have designed the vintage whimsy home they've always wanted. Here, art and creativity abound as their apartment is furnished generously with vintage estate sale goodness.

    heatherphillips-thumbs.jpg

Married for three years, Nathan and Heather clearly love vintage and collecting second hand pieces from family, estate sales and second hand shops. "Nathan works as a Site Lead and Carpenter for a residential remodeling company. Heather has an apparel design background but decided to switch careers for a breath and is currently managing a large apartment complex in Ballard. We are moving to Los Angeles in October and are looking for jobs!! We can't wait!" Living in the Pacific Northwest has its effect on designing a home. "Because of the Scandinavian history of Ballard we found many of our nautical pieces from local estate sales and vintage shops. And because we don't love spending our time outside in the overcast cold drizzle our apartment has to be warm and inviting so we don't go crazy!"

They believe strongly that designing a home depends heavily on accommodating flow and seating. Also they attribute their happy environment to the good lighting and ample windows. When I asked what were the most significant things in their house they noted the dining table which had great sentimental value. "This was our first furniture purchase together. It was in mint condition, made in Seattle by Arrowline, Inc. in 1961. The family who owned this was expecting family from the Midwest in 1961 so the father decided to refurnish their whole house. He passed away only months later and the table sat virtually unused for almost 50 years. We cherish it and are happy to bring new life to it. "

Thanks to Sophie and Isaac Carpenter for introducing me to Heather and Nathan!

(AP) ? Much has changed since the All-Stars last pulled into town in 1973. Then again, it seems like much of baseball has been turned upside down since the final out of the crazy World Series last October.

Five no-hitters, including two perfect games. A four-home run night by Josh Hamilton. Pittsburgh and Washington together in first place for the first time. Philadelphia in the cellar. Cliff Lee winless until his 14th start.

"Seeing what's going on here, it's fun to be a part of it," A.J. Burnett said after improving to 10-2 as the Pirates routed the San Francisco Giants and Tim Lincecum 13-2 Sunday.

If the season ended now, the first year of expanded playoffs would open with Baltimore at the Los Angeles Angels for the one-game AL wild card, with the winner hosting the Yankees in the division series opener. The Chicago White Sox would host two-time AL champ Texas in the other best-of-5 series ? which for one year only starts at the team with the lesser regular-season record.

In the NL, Cincinnati would host Atlanta for the wild card, with the winner hosting the Nationals ? a franchise whose only postseason appearance was as the Montreal Expos in 1981. The Pirates, out of the postseason since Francisco Cabrera's two-out, two-run hit for Atlanta in 1992, would host the post-Frank McCourt Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Everybody feels good, and they're looking for the break," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. "They've battled hard. We've had a lot of close games. It's a good time for a break."

The Angels' Mike Trout, one of a record five rookies making the trip to Kauffman Stadium for Tuesday night's game, leads the AL with a .341 average. After spending the start of the season in the minors, he's the first player with 10 homers and 20 steals at the break without having any in April, according to STATS LLC.

"A game-changer, offensively, defensively," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The kid has got a lot of talent, a ton. Usually when you see a guy that fast, you don't anticipate him hitting the ball that hard. What he's doing at 20, it's really pretty amazing."

And at 20, Trout's not even the All-Star baby. That would be 19-year-old Bryce Harper, the youngest position player in All-Star history and the third-youngest ever behind Bob Feller in 1938 and Dwight Gooden in 1984.

Harper made his big league debut on April 28, the same night Trout played his first game this season. Combining with staff ace Stephen Strasburg for a capital dynamic duo, Harper is hitting .282 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 63 games. No wonder the team put up a banner reading "NATITUDE PARK."

"I can hardly pronounce the dang word," Johnson said with a smile.

Alongside the newbies are plenty of familiar faces.

Hamilton, who hit four homers for Texas at Baltimore on May 8, and Toronto's Jose Bautista will both be there after hitting 27 homers apiece in the first half. Despite being slowed by back spasms and an intestinal virus, Hamilton leads the AL with 75 RBIs.

Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen leads with the NL with a .362 average, while Milwaukee's Ryan Braun is tops with 24 homers after successfully overturning a 50-game suspension for a positive drug test last October. In his first season with St. Louis, Carlos Beltran has a league-high 65 RBIs.

But for many, the mound has provided the biggest surprises. Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox started it with a perfect game at Seattle on April 21, and the Angels' Jered Weaver pitched a no-hitter against Minnesota on May 2. Then Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in the Mets' 51-season history on June 1, accomplishing the feat against St. Louis in the franchise's 8,020th game. Seven days later in Seattle, a record-tying six pitchers combined for a no-hitter against the Dodgers, and on June 13 San Francisco's Matt Cain pitched a perfect game against Houston.

R.A. Dickey followed his offseason climb of Mount Kilimanjaro to rise to the top of NL pitchers, going 12-1 to move into position for an All-Star start. The 37-year-old could become only the second knuckleballer to earn the honor, the first since Dutch Leonard for the AL in 1943, according to STATS.

He even studies baseball's past. He had a biography of Stan Musial in his locker earlier this season.

"Nerdy? I would say more eccentric would be the right word," teammate David Wright said. "He's extremely intelligent. He's cultured probably well beyond any of us. I think it fits in great with the knuckleball. It goes hand and hand."

In the AL, Weaver is 10-1 with a major league-best 1.96 ERA. Tampa Bay's David Price and the Rangers' Matt Harrison are tied for wins at 11-4.

And while the Rangers' Ron Washington will be in the AL dugout for the second straight season, following a 5-1 loss last year in Phoenix, Tony La Russa will be running the NL. The retired manager of the World Series champion Cardinals will be the fourth inactive skipper in All-Star history, the first since the AL's Bob Lemon after he was fired by George Steinbrenner in 1979.

"I think it's one of the best experiences you can have," La Russa said. "As soon as I was asked, I said yes before the question was finished."

Study finds winds played important role in keeping oil away from S. Fla.

Study finds winds played important role in keeping oil away from S. Fla.

    Monday, July 9, 2012

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in spring 2010 is the largest oil spill in the history of the United States, with more than 200 million gallons of crude oil released at about 1,500 m. depth off the Mississippi Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. At the time of the accident, the proximity of the intense Loop Current, flowing from the Yucatan Channel to the Florida Straits, raised major concerns that the oil at the surface of the ocean would be headed toward the South Florida and East Atlantic coastal areas. However, the dominant transport of oil and oil products was toward the Northern Gulf coastline, and no oil was observed to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

In a new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, University of Miami (UM) scientists Matthieu Le H?naff, Villy Kourafalou, Claire Paris, Judith Helgers, and Ashwanth Srinivasan, in collaboration with Zachary Aman from the Colorado School of Mines, and Patrick Hogan from the Naval Research Laboratory, use numerical simulations performed at the High Performance Computing core of UM's Center for Computational Science (CCS) to explain an important aspect of the observed oil transport.

The group has demonstrated the crucial role of the wind-induced surface drift on the fate of the oil in the Gulf of Mexico. This drift was found to have a strong influence on the displacement of oil, accounting for the influence of winds on the top surface of ocean waters through the generation of waves and additional circulation. These particular wind effects are generally not represented in ocean circulation models and were missing from real time ocean circulation predictions during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Incorporating this wind effect to the ocean currents, the UM scientists performed a novel 3D modeling study of the oil's spread from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to the ocean's surface, which allowed a realistic representation of the evolution of the 2010 oil spill. The oil spill simulations were verified through observational composites from UM's Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) and from Roffer's Ocean Fishing Forecasting System, and benefited from regional circulation models that assimilate real ocean data; no change in the oil spill extent took place to match observations. Results from this study showed that the model simulation including the wind-induced drift led to substantially improved results over an identical simulation that excluded wind drift effects.

"It is striking to notice how a large part of the surface oil erroneously made it to the Atlantic coast of Florida in the simulations that ignored the wind-induced drift. The simulation taking the drift into account correctly calculated the final destination of the oil along the Northern Gulf coastline, in remarkable agreement with observations," says Le H?naff, a research scientist at the UM Rosenstiel School, who is also affiliated with NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS). "The dominant northward winds during spring and summer of 2010 led the surface oil to be pushed onto the Northern Gulf shelf areas and toward the coasts, away from the interior of the Gulf and the Loop Current southward transport. This effect, together with the evolution of the Loop Current, was crucial in maintaining the oil from the Deepwater Horizon rig within the Gulf of Mexico and away from the South Florida coral reefs and beaches."

Coal India may raise production target further amid criticism

Kolkata: Amid mounting criticism over its inability to raise output, Coal India Ltd (CIL) has achieved its first-quarter production target of 102.46 million tonnes (mt), and is likely to raise its full-year production target from the 464 mt announced earlier. ?This is great news for India?s economy,? coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said.

The annual target for fiscal 2013 was earlier described by Coal India?s management as ambitious in view of the inability to expand its mines. The miner missed its production target of 452 mt last year, producing only 436 mt. In the quarter ended 30 June, production grew 6.4% from the same period last year.

The target for the quarter could be met because of ?constant monitoring of production at all levels and CIL?s preparedness to tackle the monsoon?, according to a spokesperson for the state-owned miner.

Monitoring production: Coal India chairman S. Narsing Rao. The state-run firm achieved its first-quarter production target. Indranil Bhoumik/Mint

Coal India?s ?disciplined performance? inspires hopes of raising India?s gross domestic product growth (GDP) to 8% in the current year, Jaiswal said.

    C. Rangarajan, chairman of the Prime Minister?s economic advisory council, had said in Kolkata last week that slowing coal production was one of the key constraints to healthy economic growth.

Coal sales in the April-June quarter at 106.18 mt exceeded production, which implies the miner managed to reduce inventory. However, it was slightly short of projected sales of 112 mt. Supplies to power companies during the quarter grew 7.6% over the same period last year to 80.44 mt.

Power producers, however, are still not happy. ?There is no beauty in setting low targets and achieving them,? said Ashok Kumar Khurana, director general of the Association of Power Producers, an industry lobby.

Power plants have had to scale back production, and plants that can together produce up to 30,000 megawatts (MW) are currently running at 40% of installed capacity, Khurana said. Many plants have ?critically low? coal stock, which will last for only around six days.

?A joint strategy should be taken along with power producers to solve the crisis over fuel shortage,? Khurana added. Coal India is reviewing long-term fuel supply agreements with power producers. These agreements have been largely spurned by power utilities because the miner committed to supply only up to 65% of the contracted volume as against 80% earlier.

The Central Electricity Authority and the coal ministry are jointly reviewing the feedback received from state-run power utilities, according to Coal India chairman S. Narsing Rao, and the final decision on the supply agreements, which is to be taken at the miner?s board meeting on 10 July, ?will accommodate collective concerns?.

Chuck E. Cheese -- the rodent -- is getting a makeover

    AP

    By CANDICE CHOI, Associated Press

(UPDATED 3:55 p.m. Eastern) NEW YORK --?Chuck E. Cheese has been given the pink slip.

The company that operates the chain of children's pizza restaurants is retiring the giant rodent's outdated image ? and the man who voiced its character for nearly two decades. CEC Entertainment Inc. says it plans to launch a national ad campaign Thursday with a revamped image of Chuck E. Cheese as a hip, electric-guitar-playing rock star.

It's just the latest makeover for the 35-year-old mascot, which started life as a New Jersey rat who sometimes carried a cigar.

CEC Entertainment, based in Irving, Texas, is struggling to revive sales at its more than 500 pizza restaurants, which offer games, prizes and a musical variety show.

In May, CEC said revenue at its locations open at least a year fell 4.2 percent in the first quarter and lowered its outlook for the year.

According to ShowBizPizza.com, a Chuck E. Cheese fan site, the man who voiced the mascot in commercials since 1993 learned of his replacement only after coming across "Chuck's Hot New Single" online and realizing it was sung by someone else. The fan site late last week published a Facebook post by Duncan Brannan, the mascot's former voice.

Brannan could not be reached for comment. But in the post, he writes that part of his assignment when he first took on the role was to transform Chuck E. Cheese from "a joke-telling, sometime off-color New Jersey rat" to a lovable, mainstream mouse.

He notes that there were various signs in recent months that suggested he was being pushed out, but that he was assured by the company that he was still the voice of Chuck E.

The Facebook post was republished by The Dallas Observer this week.

CEC Entertainment says that Brannan wasn't fired but that it simply "chose to utilize new voice talent."

The new Chuck E. Cheese that launches this week will be voiced by Jaret Reddick, the lead singer for the pop-punk bank Bowling for Soup. The Chuck E. Cheese Facebook page now shows a silhouette of a cartoon mouse playing a guitar. The details of Chuck E.'s new image will be unveiled this week.

The first Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre location opened in 1977 in San Jose, Calif. According to ShowBizPizza.com, the idea for Chuck E. came from a generic mascot costume that was acquired by the founder, Nolan Bushnell, who also co-founded Atari and Pong. Executives originally considered calling the restaurant "Rick Rat's Pizza" but a PR agency figured a rat would be a bad mascot for a pizza chain.

The name Chuck E. Cheese was selected because it downplayed the mascot's species and forced people to smile when they said it, according to the site.?

Loose kangaroo startles Washington state drivers

(AP) ? Startled drivers weren't seeing things ? it really was a kangaroo hopping down the highway in Washington state.

The meandering marsupial nearly caused a couple of accidents Saturday and police responded, keeping the 'roo off the road while its owner tracked it down and caught it with help from friends.

KNDO reports (http://is.gd/hrDcO9 ) owner lives in an area of the state where it's legal to own exotic pets. The Franklin County resident also has a zebra.

Samsung upstages Sony with f14equipped EX2F pointandshoot

Samsung's been flaunting its WiFi-equipped Smart cameras throughout the last year, but with a generally significant tradeoff in image quality, we haven't been terribly impressed. The EX2F, however, is a model we're finally eager to get our hands on. This 12.4-megapixel CMOS shooter packs an f/1.4-2.7 lens -- quite a feat for any point-and-shoot -- along with a full-size hot shoe, dual image stabilization, a top ISO setting of 12,800 (extended), a 24-79mm 3.3x lens and a 3-inch swivel VGA-resolution AMOLED display. That's in addition to the full manual shooting mode, RAW option, 1080/30p HD video capture and the standard plethora of WiFi options, including Remote Viewfinder and Auto Backup. Accessory add-ons include an optical viewfinder, external mic and a secondary flash (a smaller pop-up model is built-in, and retracts when not in use). There's no hint of pricing or availability, but with that industry-leading f/1.4 lens, pro-level features and AMOLED display, we're certain that the EX2F won't come cheap. Full PR is after the break.

Update: It appears that the EX2F includes a 1/1.7-inch sensor, compared to the significantly larger 1-inch sensor on the Sony RX100. Samsung has also confirmed that the camera will be priced at $549, and is scheduled to hit stores in August.

Jones has 5 hits, 4 RBIs as Braves beat Cubs 10-3

ATLANTA (AP) ? Chipper Jones absorbed every moment of a performance he said he'll cherish in retirement.

The newly chosen All-Star, delivered his first five-hit game in a decade, driving in four runs Tuesday night and leading the Atlanta Braves over the Chicago Cubs 10-3.

Jones was added to the NL All-Star roster before the game. The 40-year-old third baseman replaced injured Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.

He then played like an All-Star at the plate, on defense and with his first stolen base of the season.

Jones, who plans to retire after this season, went 5 for 5 for his third career five-hit game and first since Aug. 11, 2002.

"Tonight was just one of those dream games," Jones said. "I would be hard-pressed to find a game in which I played better."

After his fifth hit, a single in the eighth inning, Jones was lifted for pinch runner Juan Francisco. Jones tipped his batting helmet as he received an ovation on his way to the dugout. He emerged from the dugout for another wave to the fans as the cheers continued.

"That was fun. That was a lot of fun," Jones said. "It's just another one to file in the memory bank from my last year. It has been pretty special to this point."

Jones hit a three-run double in the sixth. He has a season-best 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .313.

"I don't think that swing is ready to retire," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said.

Jones added a defensive highlight in the eighth inning when he fielded Darwin Barney's grounder behind third base and, while in foul territory, threw him out at first.

"Impressive," Braves right-hander Jair Jurrjens said. "He stole the show today. He carried us."

Jurrjens (2-2) gave up nine hits and three runs, all unearned, in five innings. Reliever Kris Medlen pitched three perfect innings.

The Cubs led 3-1 before Michael Bourn hit a bases-loaded triple in Atlanta's five-run fifth. Martin Prado's sacrifice fly and Jason Heyward's 13th homer in the inning pushed the Braves' lead to 6-3, chasing Chris Volstad out of the game.

Volstad (0-7) was promoted from Triple-A Iowa for the start. He gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 1-3 innings.

"He didn't really pitch to the game plan and that was discouraging," Sveum said, adding Volstad didn't follow catcher Steve Clevenger.

Sveum said Volstad will have another chance.

"We don't have any options, so we'll run him out there again," Sveum said. "As of now we don't have any other options."

The loss left Volstad with 20 consecutive starts without a win. It is the longest winless streak in the majors since Jo-Jo Reyes made 28 straight winless starts for the Braves and the Blue Jays from 2008-11, according to STATS LLC.

Volstad was winless in his last 11 starts with Florida in 2011 and hasn't won in nine starts over two stints with the Cubs this season.

"It's definitely a learning process," Volstad said. "I think it's just a matter of trying to be too perfect. Too fine.

    "I just need to relax."

Bourn walked in the first and scored when Jones' single dropped in front of David DeJesus in center field. DeJesus dove and trapped the ball.

Cubs relievers Rafael Dolis and Jairo Asencio combined to walk six batters in the sixth, helping the Braves score four runs on only one hit ? Jones' bases-loaded double to right field. Prado forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk from Asencio.

The start of the game was delayed by rain for 52 minutes. Following the rain, the first-pitch temperature was 72 degrees, a drop of more than 20 degrees.

NOTES: Volstad's last win came on July 10, 2011 with Florida against Houston. ... The Cubs optioned RHP Casey Coleman to Triple-A Iowa to clear a roster spot for Volstad. Coleman gave up seven earned runs, his career high as a reliever, in last Wednesday's 17-1 loss to the Reds. ... Braves RHP Randall Delgado will face Cubs LHP Paul Maholm as the series continues on Wednesday night. Maholm threw seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over the Braves in Chicago on May 5.
