Internet and Online Business in South Africa

The invention and rise of the Internet has spurred a global move from analogue forms of media to collaborative forms of media. More and more consumers are choosing digital media over traditional media. It is an undeniable fact that digital media is here and it is here to stay.

According to a study by a research company World Wide Worx and the howzit MSN online portal, the number of South African Internet users grew to 8.5 million by the end of 2011. The number is projected to increase to more than 10 million people by the end of 2012.

With more and more consumers having access to the Internet it is important for brands to boost their online presence as an additional point of contact with consumers.

Brands should be able to assist consumers online with problems or complaints as more and more consumers are choosing to rant and rave about their dealings with brands online. Brands should only refer consumers to alternative points of contacts for solutions when it is absolutely necessary. This will further strengthen relationships between the brand and the consumer.

Another factor to consider is that there is more South Africans (29 million) using mobile phones than listening to the radio (28 million), with TV (27 million) and personal computers (6 million).

South Africa ranks fifth in the world for mobile data usage, ahead of the US, which ranks seventh. The mobile phone as an internet device is also on the rise with 11% of South Africans using their mobiles to go online.

Consumers aged 25-34 are the heaviest users of internet according to the study.
